International students can be a valuable source to your company by helping you achieve the level of staffing you require. During their time at university or college, they have the ability to familiarize themselves with New Brunswick culture. International students can bring unique knowledge and skills to your workplace that will help you gain leverage in foreign markets. Many international students enrolled in post-secondary programs in New Brunswick are eager to find work, whether permanent, part-time, summer or Co-Op program, in order to apply their skills and knowledge to a Canadian workplace setting.

How to Hire an International Student
International Student Graduate / International Co-Op Student / International Student to Work Part-time

Hiring an International Student Graduate
- Find an international student graduate who's field of study matches your area of employment.

- Make a formal written job offer to the international student and confirm that the student has a valid work permit to work in Canada.

- Students are now eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit even without a formal job offer through Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). It is the responsibility of the student to apply for the work permit.

- The employer must ensure that the student has a SIN before they can employ them. NOTE: Individuals whose SIN starts with a number from 1 through 8 do not need a work permit to be employed. Individuals with a SIN starting with the number 9 will need a work permit.

- In most cases, a post-graduate student's work permit is valid for up to 3 years after graduation. In order to extend the student's employment beyond the 3 year period the employer must apply to to Human Resources and Skills Development Canada / Service Canada (HRSDC / SC) for authorization. This authorization is called a Labour Market Opinion (LMO) . To learn more about the HRSDC/SC LMO criteria contact the Service Canada Center closest to you.

- After the first year of employment, if you are satisfied with the student's performance and would like to offer him/her full-time employment, the international student would be eligible to apply to the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee program for permanent resident status or go through the federal process offered by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) .

Hiring an International Co-Op Student
In some educational programs, students are required to gain work experience as part of the curriculum. In cases where students are enrolled in a co-op program, the institution will be the employer and the student will receive a work permit stating so. This provides the international students the opportunity to acquire work experience from various employers throughout his/her education.

- Contact the university or college co-op coordinator or the international student advisor.

- Make sure the student has applied for a valid work-permit that allows him or her to work as a co-op student while being enrolled at the educational institution.

- Once the student has a work permit in hand, he or she can begin working.

In order for an international student to work in these co-op programs:

- The student must have a valid study permit and valid work permit for co-op work;

- The intended employment must be an essential part of the student's course of study in Canada;

- The employment must be certified as part of the academic program by a responsible academic official of the institution;

- The co-op or internship employment cannot form more than 50% of the total program of study.

Hiring an international student to work part-time
This year as you are recruiting part-time and summer workers, why not consider hiring an international student?

- Post your job opportunities to online databases such as NBJobs, CareerBeacon, Service Canada's Job Bank, Monster, Jobboom, and Workopolis. International students may respond directly to advertisements you are running for part time or summer work.

- If an international student has a valid work permit he or she becomes eligible to work. To gain access to international students contact the International Student Advisor at a University or College. The Student Employment Service Center at UNB can provide assistance in finding students enrolled at UNB and STU. The Université de Moncton Student Employment Service Center can also provide assistance in finding students enrolled at Université de Moncton.

- International students are eligible to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during regular academic terms and to pursue full-time employment during school vacations, including summer vacations.
