When wanting to hire newcomers on a permanent basis, two categories of newcomers exist, those who are already in Canada and those who you will need to recruit from abroad .

Hiring Newcomers Already in Canada

Who they are? /How to find them? / How to hire them?

Who they are?
Permanent residents already in Canada, are people who have successfully gone through the Canadian immigration process. Every year, thousands of immigrants around the world choose New Brunswick or other places in Canada as their new home, the place where they want to establish themselves and start a new life.

Permanent residents have all of the rights of Canadian citizens except they don't hold a Canadian passport and they can't run for political office or vote. They may apply for Canadian citizenship after three years in Canada. However, this is not a mandatory requirement.

Permanent residents do not require special authorization or a work permit to be employed. They have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) that starts with a number from 1 through 8. If the candidate you are considering has a SIN starting with 9, he or she must have a work permit to be eligible to work in Canada (Refer to Hiring International Students or Hiring Temporary Foreign Workers).

How to Find Job-Ready Immigrants?
- Contact community agencies, organizations and/or programs with job-ready immigrants who have undergone pre-employment training and/or language classes to find out if they have the kind of candidates you need.

- Post your job opportunities to online databases such as NBJobs, CareerBeacon, Service Canada's Job Bank, Monster, Jobboom, and Workopolis. Skilled immigrants will find you!

- Speak to an employment counselor at a local settlement agency around the province. Many newcomers approach settlement agencies for assistance with employment and settlement.

- Contact the local Enterprise Agency in your region. Labour Force Development Officers may be aware of newcomers in the region who are looking for employment.

Hiring a Permanent Resident Already in Canada
The process of hiring a permanent resident already in Canada is the same as hiring a Canadian citizen.

Hiring Newcomers from Abroad

Who they are?
If your prospective workers are coming to live and work permanently in Canada, they must apply for permanent residence through the Skilled Worker Program. Skilled workers are people who can become permanent residents because they are able to become economically established in Canada.

To come to Canada as skilled workers, they will be assessed on six selection factors and a point system. The six selection factors are:

- education
- abilities in English and/or French, Canada’s two official languages
- experience
- age
- arranged employment in Canada
- adaptability

They must also show that they have enough money to support themselves and their dependants after arriving in Canada, and pass a medical examination and security and criminal checks.

When they are recognized as Permanent residents, they have all of the rights of Canadian citizens except they don't hold a Canadian passport and they can't run for political office or vote. They may apply for Canadian citizenship after three years in Canada. However, this is not a mandatory requirement.

Permanent residents do not require special authorization or a work permit to be employed. They have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) that starts with a number from 1 through 8. If the candidate you are considering has a SIN starting with 9, he/she must have a work permit to be eligible to work in Canada (Refer to Hiring International Students or Hiring Temporary Foreign Workers).
